The San Francisco Opera
David Gockley has been named the new General Director of the San Francisco Opera, starting January 2006. This is interesting, and a bit exciting. The is the guy who was a part of Nixon in China's premiere. He says the right things, trying to experiment with new directions in opera while doing the classics and expanding the audience for opera, which is vital for it's sucess in the future. We'll see.
I hope he had no part in the selection of the stuff for next season. They're doing Butterfly again? They just did it last season. I hope they get a better Butterfly and a Pinkerton (no matter how good I get I will never get this part because I'm Asian, but my dream role is Goro anyways) who at least looks like an American, not like a Tsarist Russian General. However, I'm going to check out Doctor Atomic, love the music of John Adams.
